Black Rock Tidal Power 5MW Tidal Energy Project

Mersey Consulting is currently engaged by Black Rock Tidal Power to help develop the first full-scale application of the TRITON platform system, developed by TidalStream of the UK and German parent company SCHOTTEL Hydro. The 5 MW project will be installed in the Minas Passage of the Bay of Fundy in 2017. Mersey Consulting is an integral part of the project team, advancing several key project elements including commercial agreements, QSHE management, and regulatory compliance issues for the CAN$15M project.

Energy Sector Supply Chain Development

Marine Renewable Energy Supply Chain Development

Mersey Consulting’s Senior Consultant partnered with Glas Ocean Engineering and the Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise to engage the Nova Scotia Ocean Technology sector in tidal energy. The project team organized a workshop with international experts and representatives of 60 Ocean Tech companies to increase awareness of technical challenges and help categorize the sector’s capabilities. The report to the Nova Scotia Department of Energy identified opportunities for the public sector to support sustainable competitiveness in the tidal energy supply chain.

Research, Development and Demonstration: Challenges and Opportunities

Together with Maxis Energy Solutions, Mersey Consulting’s Senior Consultant completed an inventory of clean energy RD&D initiatives in Atlantic Canada and identified strategies for facilitating partnering, cooperation and synergy within the sector for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Atlantic Energy Gateway Initiative.

Renewable Energy Opportunities and Competitiveness Assessment

An evaluation of opportunities for NS companies to enter local and global renewable energy supply chain was conducted by Mersey Consulting’s Senior Consultant and Maxis Energy Solutions. The study included an extensive review of the sector internationally, creation of NS supplier database, analysis of employment and financial benefits based on committed NS projects and government policy and recommendations for government strategy development.

Tidal Energy Workshop organized for Nova Scotia Ocean Technology Sector


Harbourside Commercial Park (former Sydney Steel Corp.)

Mersey Consulting’s Senior Consultant led the work of the environmental consultant for the redevelopment of the 400-acre Sydney Steel Corporation site. This multiyear project included the inspections and hazardous materials management plans for the environmental decommissioning of over 60 buildings and several kilometres of petroleum and gas piping. Innovated methods were developed to manage risks associated with aging infrastructure and close proximity to residential and marine areas.

In addition, Mersey Consulting’s Senior Consultant led the design of land quality investigations, oversaw the work of environmental consultants conducting Phase II and III Environmental Site Assessment and managed the remediation and environmental management plans. Eighteen studies valued over CAN$1M were completed with over 100,000 analytical data. Today the property is a self-sufficient commercial park in the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Port Mersey Commercial Park (former Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd.)

Mersey Consulting is assisting Nova Scotia Lands Inc. with the regulatory compliance and project management services.

Project Manager for Chemical Containment Upgrades at Brooklyn Power Corp. biomass cogen facility in Queens County, NS on behalf of provincial crown corporation Renova Scotia Bioenergy Inc. Managed all aspects of project including design, tendering, contracting, and construction supervision. Complex contractual relationships required ongoing and diligent communication with client, owner, client’s contractor and subcontractors.

In addition, Mersey Consulting provided historical engineering and environmental quality data and interpretation for feasibility assessment of dredging options for Port Mersey Commercial Park in Liverpool, NS as subconsultant to CBCL Limited.

Utility Company Environmental Management and Liability Rationalization

Mersey Consulting assists a major electrical utility with environmental liability management by conducting Environmental Site Assessments and land quality management for a variety of properties. Typically this includes administering the regulatory compliance process on behalf of the client and acting as Qualified Site Professional for the entire process.

Specifically, activities include soil and water sampling, environmental inspections, groundwater monitoring, remedial action plan development, and planning and oversight of remedial activities. Often the properties are legacy sites, but Mersey Consulting’s work also includes emergency spill response, consenting for new and operating facilities, and design of infrastructure upgrades.

Water, Energy and Environmental Compliance Audits

Conducted comprehensive compliance audits of federal government facilities including airports and Coast Guard bases, and private commercial and industrial facilities.

Lead Auditor for Environmental Audit of Southside Canadian Coast Guard Base in St. John’s, NF. Audit augmented existing information in preparation for Environmental Management System (EMS) for the base.

Lead Auditor conducting environmental compliance audits for the Department of National Defence at the Civilian Aviation Area of the Goose Bay Airport. Activities included project planning and administration, performance of Compliance Audits in relation to ISO 14001 (EMS) criteria, and preparation of a detailed audit report complete with evaluations and recommendations.
